The closest you can get to a dragon. If you are a fan of unique plants, this is for you.
Alocasia Dragon Scale (also known as Alocasia baginda 'Dragon Scale') is a stunning plant, known for its unique, textured leaves that resemble dragon scales. To keep it healthy and thriving, here are some care tips:
1. Light
- Bright, indirect light is ideal. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can scorch their leaves.
- Low light might cause the plant to become leggy and lose its vibrant foliage.
2. Watering
- Keep the soil slightly moist, but don’t let it sit in water. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry, but don't let it dry out completely.
- They prefer humidity, so misting or using a humidifier can be beneficial.
3. Temperature
- This plant thrives in warm temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C).
- Keep it away from air conditioners, and heating vents to prevent temperature stress.
4. Soil
- Well-draining, aerated soil is essential. A mix made for tropical plants or a blend of potting soil with perlite and orchid bark will work well.
5. Fertilizing
- Fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring to summer). Feed once a month, but cut back in the fall and winter when the plant isn’t actively growing.
6. Humidity
- As a tropical plant, Dragon Scale prefers high humidity (around 60% or more).
- If you’re in a drier environment, you can increase humidity with a humidity tray, misting, or a room humidifier.
7. Repotting
- Repot every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and provide space for growth. It’s best to do this in the spring or early summer.
8. Pests
- Watch out for common houseplant pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Keep the leaves clean and inspect regularly.
9. Pruning
- Remove any yellow or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and encourage healthy growth.
The Dragon Scale is a bit more finicky compared to some other houseplants, but with the right conditions, it will reward you with its striking foliage!
